GENUINE JERSEY INVITES BUSINESSES TO SUPPORT ITS MEMBERS

The Island’s business community is being invited to support local producers by becoming a sponsor of the Genuine Jersey Products Association.  The Association which has been championing growth, sustainability and innovation by ‘buying local’ products long before it became a popular movement has revised its charter to include businesses keen to support its members.

Since the Association started in 2001 it has attracted a loyal and enthusiastic membership which qualifies to use the distinctive Genuine Jersey mark on products that have been reared, grown or caught in Jersey or created by accredited Islanders.  Now a business that would not qualify to be a member can become a sponsor by providing financial assistance or expertise.

The Association’s Chief Executive, John Garton, said the income from the new sponsorship category would go towards the key objectives of raising awareness of local goods and supporting all those involved in their production.

‘Funding from sponsors will help us to develop the Genuine Jersey brand which is becoming a byword for the best the Island has to offer. When Islanders and visitors buy produce and products bearing the mark they can do in the knowledge that they are supporting local jobs, boosting the Island’s economy, embracing seasonality and reducing their carbon footprint,’ he said.

Annual subscriptions for Genuine Jersey sponsors are based on the number of full-time equivalent employees. Business employing up to five staff would pay £156, those employing from six to 25 £234, 26 to 50 £390 and business with a workforce exceeding 50 would pay £780.

Mr Garton explained that rather than pay a subscription, a sponsor could offer a service to the equivalent value to Genuine Jersey members through the Association. An example of this is the Commercial Combined Insurance scheme offered by Islands Insurance for members with a turnover of less than £250,000 a year. This provides free Public and Product Liability cover of £2.5 million with optional cover extensions for lower than normal premiums.

As well as Islands Insurance, the Atlantic Hotel and Ocean Restaurant, Direct Input, Bleu Soleil Camping and Jersey Pottery Restaurants have already become sponsors. The Economic Development Department already qualifies through its grant funding of the Association.

The Managing Director of the Atlantic Hotel, Patrick Burke, said. ‘We have worked closely with Genuine Jersey for a number of years and are delighted to now formalise our relationship with them by becoming one of their first sponsors. We use the best local products whenever possible in our Ocean Restaurant, many of which already have international recognition and arrive straight into our kitchens with the distinctive Genuine Jersey logo.’

In return for supporting the Association, sponsors are permitted to use the Genuine Jersey Sponsor mark, are featured on the Genuine Jersey website and are invited to attend a range of events and activities organised by and involving Genuine Jersey. Businesses interested in becoming a sponsor are invited to call Mr Garton on 448114 or email john.garton@jersey.com

New Chief Executive Appointed

John Garton has been appointed Chief Executive of the Genuine Jersey Products Association. John has a marketing background and previously held a senior business development role at Le Riche (now Sandpiper CI). In his new role, John is responsible for the day-to-day management of Genuine Jersey and its brand, leading on and off-island marketing initiatives, and providing professional support and advice to existing and new members.

Ken Syvret remains as the Chairman of GJPA Management Committee which will continue representing the interest of its members.

John Garton can be contacted on 448114 or email: john.garton@jersey.com
